SVP: Heaven or Hell?
Swiss Stuff August 29th, 2007On October 21, 2007 the Swiss population will be electing a new federal parliament.
Swiss voters will elect all 200 members of the House and 44 of the 46 members of the Senate.
There is no national ballot. Strictly speaking, the federal election consists of 26 cantonal elections held on the same day. Voters are only allowed to vote for candidates in the canton where they are officially registered. Candidates run in one canton only.
The 4 major parties in this country (and as such represented in the Federal Council) are the Christian Democrats (CVP/PDC), the Social Democrats (SPS/PSS), the Liberal Democrats (FDP/PRD) and the Swiss People’s Party (SVP/UDC).
The latter is the most right-wing of the four, steadfastidly defending patriotic values until the bitter end…and by all means. And so, every four years, we are treated to the most unambiguous campaign, such as this year’s:
You’ll certainly have gotten the message: let’s kick the “black sheep” out of our country, the said sheep being criminal foreigners.
I wouldn’t call myself a leftie, nor do I support the building of minarets in Swiss villages (forcing “integration” down people’s throats is not the solution; it only causes EVEN MORE dissent and prejudices).
But I can’t help feeling that the SVP (UDC in the French-speaking part) just went a little overboard with the following video – which has since been removed from their web site by court order:
Note the transition between heaven (Himmel) and hell (Hölle): Joseph G. would have been proud of you!
P.S. And why was the video banned may you ask?
Because the youth featured above had been told that they were acting in a movie against violence and not for some party’s propaganda.

….and now you may officially pity me,because I actually live in hell!!Having said this I have to add that i sometimes feel a bit, sort of, queasy when walking through the town alone after a meeting of the English Club, but i wouldn’t say that we have lots more crime than Berne or Zürich happening here. Considering that Biel is one of the few towns where the population of foreigners and swiss are almost 50/50 it’s the best proof that we CAN live side by side, not to mention the bilingual aspect! !
I ‘worry ‘ more about our towns ugly architecture, whilst the old town is really quaint and lovely the newer parts are an ugly mix and match…………
And whilst I am actually standing on my sopabox, I would like to point out that we appointed the first black and foreign ( i.e. not native swiss) councillors for the city’s council and into other dignified political or other jobs as well as in national votes we are always voting very foreigner friendly.
So thinking of the right wing ideologies of the SVP of course this must seem like hell to them:) but you are right and I am happy for the youngsters that they won against that mighty party.Interestingly enough Sämi Schmid is a SVP magistrate but he is not right wing…………………
off my sopabox now!
muahahaha…
thats hilarious …
They must have some really good swiss grass …
oh no sorry.. grass is green.. so thats a no go..
then they must have put way to much Kirsch in their good old swiss fondue…
Hmm, I wonder why the SVP is so against foreigners? In the second half of the video they show pictures of the world-famous banks…. but who keeps all their money in those banks and holds them up? Without “foreigners,” the swiss economy would not exist.
